Verify that the Sophos anti-virus software is correctly updating

Occasionally, the Sophos anti-virus software stops updating correctly. The cause of this is unknown at this time. When this happens, your Sophos software will need to be reinstalled. Therefore, you will need to occasionally check your Sophos settings to make sure that it is correctly updating and still actively scanning for viruses. This can be done by following these steps.

1. Right-click on the Sophos shield icon Sophos icon in the system tray to the left of the clock.

2. In the shortcut menu, left click on the “Open Sophos Anti-Virus” option.

3. When the program opens there should be a status panel on the left side of the window. Directly under the Status title you will see the “On-access scanning” status indicator. The status should be “Active” (see sample at right). If the status is “Unknown” please contact CIT Computing staff or your unit computer support person. It will be necessary to reinstall the software, which can be downloaded from a website at UNL.

4. If the “On-access scanning” status is Active, check to see that the “Last updated” date is the current date. If it is, the software has updated correctly. Again, if the date is incorrect, please contact your computer support person.
